Dr. Krenik retired from teaching Visual Art at Nauset Regional Middle School (grades 6-8) in Orleans, MA on 4/29/16 due to chronic health issues.

2015

Dr. Krenik served as a Kappa Delta Pi 2015 scholarship reviewer, and for Kappa Delta Pi 2015 Conference proposals.

2014

Dr. Krenik received a Ph.D. in General Education with a specialization in Art Education at Walden University on May 25, 2014. His dissertation topic was "The Influence of Problem-based Learning on Drawing Ability". The Commencement Ceremony was held at the Marriott Harbor Front Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland on July 12, 2014.

Dr. Krenik presented: "The Influence of Problem-based Learning on Drawing Ability" at Kappa Delta Pi International Learning, Leadership, and Practice: Educating Global Citizens Conference: Calgary, Alberta, Canada, October 2-4, 2014.

Dr. Krenik presented: "Teaching drawing techniques with Problem-based Learning and Skill-based Learning" at the Cape Cod Collaborative All Cape In-Service Day, at Dennis-Yarmouth High School October 10, 2014.

Dr. Krenik presented: "The Influence of Problem-based Learning on Drawing Ability", and, "Creating a Visual Culture Online Course" at Visual Reviva, the Conference of Canadian Society of Educators for Art, hosted by Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, October 24-25, 2014.

Dr. Krenik presented: "The Influence of Problem-based Learning on Drawing Ability" at Visual Articulations, the 2014 Massachusetts Art Education Association Conference, hosted by Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, Massachusetts, November 8-9, 2014.

Dr. Krenik served as a Kappa Delta Pi 2015 scholarship reviewer, and as a reviewer for Kappa Delta Pi's 2015 Conference proposals.

Dr. Krenik presented two research lectures at the National Art Education Association's Convention in San Diego, March 29-31. The presentations are: The Influence of Problem-based Learning on Drawing Ability; and Creating a Visual Culture online Learning Course From Theory to Research to Practice

2013

Dr. Krenik was a reviewer for session proposals for the 2014 Phi Delta Kappa/Future Educators Association National Conference, a subsidiary of Phi Delta Kappa International to be held April 10-12 in Minneapolis, MN.

John Krenik has been appointed Alumni Chair for AEX (Walden University), a local chapter of Kappa Delta Pi and looks forward to serving on the Board.

John Krenik presented an interactive discussion, "Would Teaching Either Problem-based Learning or Skills-based Learning Significantly Increase Students Drawing Abilities?" which is his dissertation topic, as well as a research lecture, "Revisiting Field Dependence/Independence, Perception, Creativity and Artistic Outcomes" at the 2013 National Art Education Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, March 7-10.

John Krenik presented "The Influence of Problem-based Learning on Drawing Ability", a poster session at the Learning and the Brain Conference; "Educating for Creative Minds: Using Brain Science to Ignite Innovation and Imagination", held February 14-16, 2013, San Francisco, CA. This poster session informed participant viewers on the brain-based learning involved in problem-based learning. This is also John Krenik's dissertation topic for his Ph.D. at Walden University.

John Krenik was an Off-site Public Speaking Competition Judges 2013 for Phi Delta Kappa International/Pi Lambda Theta/Future Educators Association® 2013 competitive events in in Orlando, Florida, April 2013.

John applied for and received a $700. grant from Target for bus transportation to bring all of the 6th graders at Nauset Regional Middle School to see the art exhibit "Making Waves" at the Cotuit Center for the Arts, an exhibit sponsored by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. The Exhibit is free and open to the public and runs January 7-February 23, 2013.

John received grants totaling $3,300. for Nauset Regional Middle School's 5th Annual Arts Day from the following local cultural councils: Eastham, Brewster, Orleans, and Wellfleet, as well as a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Arts Day theme was "Get Up and Move" and was held January 30, 2013 and featured performances by Oooch, and Eve Costello: Birth of Flamenco from Young Audiences of Massachusetts. Arts Day also featured a laser light show by Prismatic Magic, and 24 different exciting workshops for students to rotate through presented by volunteers, local and regional artists, and NRMS teachers, all happening within a single school day.

2012

John presented "Arts Day: Engaging your Entire School Population in the Arts during an Entire School Day", at "A Hat-full of 21st Century Skills" Fall 2012 Massachusetts Art Education Association Conference at Salem State University November 9-11, 2012. In conjunction with this conference, John exhibited two artworks (see artist blog).

John presented "Arts Day: Engaging your Entire School Population in the Arts during an Entire School Day", as well as a post graduate panel dissertation discussion, "Graduate Student Research Symposium" at the Annual National/Provincial Conference of Canadian Society for Education through Art/Alberta Teachers Association in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada October 25-27, 2012.

John is the recipient of a $3,615. grant in support of " Science and Art Connections at Pleasant Bay" for Nauset Regional Middle School Students by the Friends of Pleasant Bay http://www.fopb.org for the 2012-2013 school year. The grant will be used to buy electronic anemometers, compasses, hand held magnifiers, Prismacolor Art Stix, flash drives, as well as funds for bus transportation. Students will take 8 different all day field trips to different locations in all four seasons at Pleasant Bay. Students will check wind speed in different locations, use compasses to orient themselves regarding the geographic environment, and draw scientific illustrations of minute structures visible under hand held magnifiers. Students will use art stix to create plein air color drawings of the unique aesthetic areas of Pleasant Bay and will photograph the areas they draw which will be displayed side by side with their plein air drawings.

John volunteered as a panel of reviewers for submissions in the Phi Delta Kappa International April Issue of Classroom Tips, 2012 on the theme of "How do you recognize and respond to signs of possible student abuse/neglect?" "These one-page essays, packed with practical advice, play a critical role in helping teachers improve their practice".

John volunteered as a panel of reviewers for submissions in Phi Delta Kappa International Future Educators of America Projects' Moment Competition, 2012. "The purpose of the FEA Moment Competition is to showcase three students at the FEA National Conference whose FEA experience has been a convincing factor in their decisions to become educators".

John volunteered as part of a panel of reviewers in the Kappa Delta Pi Educational Foundation: Scoring Literacy Alive Projects, 2011-2012. "Literacy Alive is Kappa Delta Pi's signature community service initiative. The purpose of the initiative is is to encourage and promote literacy in communities across the world through programs designed by Kappa Delta Pi members and chapters in their respective areas.

John presented "Arts Day: Engaging Your Entire School Population in the Arts during an Entire School Day" at the National Art Education Convention in New York, NY, March 2, 2012.

John received grants for Nauset Regional Middle School's 4th Annual Arts Day from the following local cultural councils: Eastham, Brewster, Orleans, and Wellfleet, as well as a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, and Kappa Delta Pi. This year's Arts Day will be held January 30, 2012 and will feature the following performances from Young Audiences of Massachusetts: Manguito, and Sumaj Chasquis of which parents will be invited. Also a feature workshop by Oooch; STOMP. Arts Day will also feature a laser light show by Prismatic Magic, and 24 different exciting workshops for students to rotate through presented by volunteers, local and regional artists, and NRMS teachers, all happening within a single school day.

2011

John attended the Kappa Delta Pi 100th Anniversary Convocation held at the JW Marriot Hotel in Indianapolis Indiana November 4-5, 2011. He attended business meetings, a President's reception, as well as being honored as a Kappa Delta Pi Teacher of Honor during the General Session on November 4.

John presented "Abstract Art: Appreciation through Personal Experience" at the Annual Massachusetts Art Education Conference, November 12, 2011, Resort and Conference Center, Hyannis, MA.

John Krenik presented "Creativity and Intelligence: What Underlying Influences do Motivation and Attention have on Creativity and Learning?" at the Canadian Society of Education through Art 2011 Conference in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, October 14, 2011.

John is the recipient of a $3,020. grant in support of "The Pleasant Bay No One Sees" for Nauset Regional Middle School by the Friends of Pleasant Bay http://www.fopb.org. The grant will be used to buy digital cameras and sketch-notebooks as well as for bus transportation. Students will make 8 different all day field trips to different locations in all four seasons at Pleasant Bay to find, photograph, sketch, create poetry, and write about why the areas they chose are the "Pleasant Bay No One Sees", and back at school students will create artwork inspired by their experience. While in the field, students will also be conducting science and math experiments. Results of this interdisciplinary project will be presented to the community on the evening of May 29, 2012 at 7:00pm in the Nauset Regional Middle School Auditorium, Orleans, MA, and the public will be welcome to attend.

John Krenik presented "Neuroscience and Creativity: Why Every Art Teacher Should Know How Their Students Think and Create" at the 2011 National Art Education Association National Convention in Seattle Washington, March 17-20, 2011.

John was the recipient of a $1,500. grant in support of Arts Day at Nauset Regional Middle School by the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod http://www.artsfoundation.org. This Program was in collaboration with Young Audiences of Massachusetts and is supported in part by a grant from the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod http://www.artsfoundation.org, and the NRMS student Magazine Drive. This Program is also supported in part by grants from The Wellfleet Cultural Council, The Orleans Cultural Council, The Eastham Cultural Council, and the Brewster Cultural Council, all local agencies which are supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency totaling $1,500.00. The Purpose of Arts Day is to increase awareness and appreciation of the arts through collaboration with community organizations and artists in a variety of arts events for the entire school throughout the day. The event was held on January 31, 2011.

2010

John Krenik presented "Neuroscience and Creativity: Why Every Art Teacher Should Know How Their Students Think and Create" at the Fall 2010 Massachusetts Art Education Association Conference hosted by the University of Massachusetts - Amherst on November 13, 2010.

John Krenik presented a poster session "Neurological Functions, Thinking, and Creativity" at the 27th International Learning and the Brain Conference; No Brain Left Behind: Improving Teaching, Testing and Treatment in Cambridge, MA November 19-21, 2010.

John Krenik was named a 2010 Teacher of Honor by Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education. As the 23rd recipient of the award this year, Krenik joins a small group of remarkable educators who have been recognized with this honor. Since the Teacher of Honor award was established in the spring of 2008, Kappa Delta Pi has named a select few from around the world as Teachers of Honor. John Krenik presented "Neurological Functions, Thinking, and Creativity" at the Massachusetts Art Education Association Fall Conference on Novemver 14, 2009 at UMASS Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, MA.

John Krenik attended the 24th Learning and the Brain Conference on Modern Brains: Enhancing memory and Performance in this Distracting Digital Age, November 20-22, 2009 in Cambridge, MA. John also took a tour of the fMRI brain imaging scanner at the Athinoula A. Martinos Imaging Center, at the MIT labratory of John Gabrieli, PhD.

John Krenik presented a poster session on "Neuroscience, Self Awareness and it's Relation to Art: A Specific Look at Adolescent Neurology", at the Learning and the Brain Conference in Washington, D.C., May 7-9, 2009. John also introduced the guest speakers, Dr. Lawrence Steinberg, and Dr. Robert Epstein for their session, "Teen Brains and Thinking", as well as a scheduled panel discussion immediatly following the lectures.

John Krenik was named Master Teacher, 2008 by the Massachusetts Department of Education.

John Krenik attended the Learning and the Brain Conference, April 25-29, 2008 at the MIT Faculty Club in Cambridge, MA to learn more about how the latest studies in brain research impacts education.

John helped a colleague and client receive their professional teaching license through Class Measures in 2008.
